Have Each Other’s Backs Again: Couples in Recovery Workshop

This interactive workshop supports couples in recovery to heal, reconnect, and strengthen their relationship by learning and practicing research-based healthy relationship skills. Whether your relationship is in crisis or robust, couples can always hone their relationship skills and benefit from reflecting with other like-minded couples about what it means to be a couple in recovery, and decide as a unique couple unit your vision for your relationship.

Schedule: (4 hour workshop)

Part I: (1 hr, 15 min.) Lecture- What are strengths & challenges of couples in recovery? What is codependency vs. interdependency? How can couples in recovery develop individual and couples recovery programs? Practice- 1.) Communication skills practice- mindful listening/speaking & couples in recovery cards 2.) Venn diagram & discuss top priorities for your individual and couple recovery programs.
Part II: (1 hr, 15 min. + additional 15 minute break in the middle) Lecture- What is attachment theory & how does one’s attachment history influence addiction, codependency, & relationships in general? What is your partner’s & your own attachment style? How can partners negotiate the closeness and boundaries (re: emotional/physical intimacy) they desire? Practice- 1.) Emotional & physical boundaries exercise 2.) Draw your couple bubble (what makes you & your partner feel loved, emotionally safe, & secure?) 3.) Attachment style quiz- homework
Part III:(1 hr, 15 min.) Lecture- How can couples heal from addiction & codependency and rebuild trust and connection? Can you attune or read your partner’s emotions? What do “secure functioning relationships” look like & how do they support couples & individual recovery? What is your relationship vision? Practice 1.) Letting go of resentments & strengthening trustworthiness through communication skills exercises (validate & empathize), action steps, & new perspectives 2.) Create a trust building plan 3.) “I’ve got your back” meditation / relationship visioning 4.) Secure functioning quiz- homework

Facilitator: Lana Issacson, LCSW, CAC III
Lana began working in the addiction treatment field in 2001 at an outstanding agency in the Chicago suburbs called Families and Adolescents in Recovery at which parents were given the support and tools to work their own recovery program, in addition to participating in multi-family therapy groups and individual family and couples therapy. Since moving to Colorado, Lana began working with adults and couples and realized her need for further training. Thus, she completed the 2-year post-graduate MFT Certificate Program at Denver Family Institute, The Gottman Institute’s “Couples and Addiction Recovery” Training, and PACT (Psychobiological Approach to Couples Therapy) Level I Training. Lana presented at the 2016 NCAD Conference on “Bridging the Gap- Integrating the Wisdom of the Addictions Counseling and Marriage and Family Therapy Fields” and at the 2017 CAAP Conference on “Couples in Recovery- Building Secure Attachments”. She specializes in couples and families in recovery at her private practice in Lakewood.
